#5- Tanner McKee, Stanford

McKee surpassed 4,600 career passing yards which was 12th most in Stanford history

Overall

Great size for a QB at 6’6 229 which will intrigue teams and he will likely be a prospect that can earn notice through his performances at the combine and his pro day. In 2022, his statistics were 62% completion percentage, 2947 yds, 13 TD, 8 int, and 2 rushing TD’s. He has plenty of strength in his arm to make the necessary throws while he does not have an elite arm. Physically imposing with his stature on the field. McKee is a master of ball placement and very technically refined with the ability to navigate the pocket and make some off schedule throws. McKee is mobile enough to run for a first down if field is open and he does have long strides so he can cover ground in space. He’s not expected to have the highest ceiling regarding explosiveness, but he is a very strong prospect with the ability to place balls in tight coverage for his receivers and to stand in the pocket and strike with poise. McKee could be one of the most technically refined QB’s in this draft with the potential to step in an run an efficient offense. McKee is projected to go in the third round by NFL Mock Draft Database and could be a good value pick for a team needing a polished passer. McKee is not a polarizing prospect, but perhaps is an under the radar prospect that could be productive when in the correct system.

Film Analysis

-Good mobility for his size rolling out to his right with a good high point pass into the back right corner of endzone while on the move to place it over defenders to where his receiver could make a play on it showing good awareness of levels on his throws

-Good touch and lead pass on a left sideline throw allowing his receiver to break deep out of coverage and to run under the ball for a TD

-Good pace and location on a left sideline throw placing it right over defenders head in tight coverage

-Accurate back shoulder throw to the right front corner of endzone with precise location

-Has arm strength to throw bullet pass across the middle on a post route for TD in tight coverage

-Very good with placing balls in tight coverage where his receiver can react and adjust to make plays away from the defender

-Good throw downfield while rolling left to layer it in to WR between CB and Safety on left sideline

-Seems to be very accurate even without the best arm all though his arm is good enough that his precise location and mechanics allow him to throw his receivers open in tight coverage

-Good poise under pressure in the pocket and can navigate the pocket to avoid rushers even with his size and the fact that he is a pocket passer

-Good movement and jump pass rolling to his right

-Great pass to throw away from DB on right sideline where his diving receiver could catch the ball away from the defender

-Good pocket movement and balance to step up and deliver a throw to an open receiver on what could have been a broken play

-Elite ball location and ability to place balls in very tight coverage trusting his receivers as he gives them an opportunity to make a play on the ball

-Produces velocity when he steps up and fires but has solid mobility with about the same speed as Joe Flacco with his long strides allowing for some improvisation

-Great at leading his receivers in stride and can make accurate passes even while getting hit and is good at making throws even with his feet on the move and not planted

-Threw a high point 50 50 ball into right side of endzone and placed it for his receiver to have the opportunity to make a great leaping grab

-Perfect deep throw down right sideline hitting his receiver over the shoulder on the run

-Is a very accurate and precise passer with desirable size and can run an offense effectively in the field general role
